We aren't an organization with the kind of resources to package and publish. Our conversations are more like an open, ongoing stream!

It would be great if someone volunteered to do a monthly or some frequency newsletter.

What might be helpful in such a newsletter?

Hi Nancy, I had suggested several times a km4dev newsletter but acknowledge that somebody needs to make it happen, and I cannot colunteer for a full newsletter, but happy to lead a section if others want to try it out…

I would love to see for example: - Summaries of key threads (done by those who raised the threads) - Space for stories, profiles (would need to be generated) - Ks toolkit corner, highlighting one tool - Abstract of a recent km4dev journal article (chosen from journal) - Announcements (taken from those shared on list and Ning) - Links (taken from those shared on list and Ning)

I know it takes a bit of effort to set up a newsletter at the beginning, but putting something out every 2-3 months is not a big project.

In addition to the items that Simone suggested, I think recycling an “old” topic might spark new questions are renewed interest: http://wiki.km4dev.org/Discussions . It’s not as if KM4Dev is content-poor. It’s more like content riches go beyond the capacity to organize. ?

my suggestion of getting a newsletter up; you need three person on diff roles;

1. editor, 2. chief editor who finalise the content what to publish 3. assistant editor

invite members on the list to contribute contents.

set rules what you can post. events, conference, essay of km/ic.

That is a good division of roles. The more volunteers we have the better incase the primary volunteers are unavailable during certain months. I think a team of 3-6 people would be ideal.

To make the newsletter concise I suggest we have the following sections:

1. KM4Dev Recap or KM4Dev Review - this is where a summary of discussions will be made. 2. KM Member of the Month - In this section we will highlight a member of the community 3. Resource Section - Of course we would have a better name but here we can discuss KM tools and resources being uses, have links to blogs, etc. 4. Announcements

Other suggestions are welcome. If anyone is interested in being involved with this please let me know so we can arrange a brainstorming meeting for next week.

Pete Cranston: sprint / marathon analogy

Summary looks good to me, a good model of something useful to people like me who often simply scan mails to note what is happening. And yes, there's a consensus that something like a newsletter would be welcomed.

I think your question might be about the different kinds of energy that animate KM4Dev, at least this mailing list which is pretty much all I use regularly. I can think of two

• There's a spontaneous-reaction, sprint kind of energy, when a question sparks ideas or stimulates people to share. That kind of energy is infectious, and animates conversations for a while, then dies down. It's as random as the viral effect in online social networks, and very powerful. That kind of energy might stimulate people to drop in ideas or cases to a newsletter section on the wiki, for example (or any one of the 100s of other tools we could suggest).

• There's a marathon runner kind of energy: in it for the long haul, interested to maintain the infrastructure, work in the background to try and make sure the space remains open. That's the kind of energy that animates the Core Group - current and ex - and others who constantly chime to welcome or comment, and do summaries. The KM4Dev Journal is another example, amazing long-term commitment and effort. Something like a regular newsletter needs a bit of that, to make it happen regularly, compile it, curate it. And most of us use all or almost all of that kind of energy in our paid work so it's always been in shorter supply.

I'd LOVE to know how to increase or tap into more of that second kind of energy, or how to use the first kind to stimulate more of the second.

Riff Fullan: volunteer newsletter as model for other efforts

Dear all,

@John: yes, I think your summary captures the newsletter discussion(s) well….

@Pete: I also see the two kinds of energy you mention. Sometimes it feels like the first (sprint) burns hotter but shorter and the second (marathon) cooler but longer. Both are crucial contributors to the life of the community.

Getting back to the newsletter, it could be an opportunity for a test case on what kind of energy the KM4Dev community needs for a newsletter. In the course of that testing, it may help to answer some of the bigger questions around the community (e.g. around volunteerism vs. mandated/contracted time, around finding the best fit between the ‘energy source’ and the task/output). I think it would be interesting to see what a small group of volunteers (who have already identified themselves in this case) does with the newsletter idea, and to revisit things in another 6-9 months to see how it’s going, so….

@Okey and other newsletter volunteers, I look forward to hearing more about your discussions!
