Where have we come from? Where are we now? And most interestingly, where are we headed?

• If you are part of the Knowledge Management for Development (KM4Dev) Community...
• If you work in knowledge management/knowledge sharing for development and would like to meet peers from around the world to test ideas, ask for advice, learn from others...
• If you live near or can get to Seattle and would like to engage around knowledge management... and want to engage with fabulous peers in development...

...then we would be happy if you’d join us for the KM4Dev2013 meeting in Seattle Washington, USA between 29 and 31st July, 2013 for 2.5 days of learning, sharing, problem solving and imagining the future together.

Focus

This year (see previous KM4Dev meetings), we want to focus on new trends in knowledge management. 15 years after the World Bank’s World Development Report stated that knowledge, not capital, is the key to sustained economic growth and improvements in human well-being.

• What is currently the role of knowledge management in international development? What have we learned about learning and knowledge sharing for development?

• Has KM been mainstreamed in organizations? What has knowledge management contributed to organizational change? Or has KM within international development made such inroads that it is no longer necessary as a stand-alone domain?

• What are the emerging KM tools, toys and their practices? What is cooking after Web 2.0 and social media? What can we learn together and take back and apply to our work immediately?

• What progress have we made in monitoring and evaluating our KM interventions?

Our first day, Monday 29, will be opened with a plenary session exploring these big ideas, and then participants can offer sessions in Open Space. Midday we'll have our Poster Sessions. We’ll conclude the Open Space on Tuesday 30 in the afternoon with a series of activities to synthesize and “make sense” across the sessions. Wednesday 31 will be a half day dedicated to a KM4Dev community meeting. Seattle is also home to many interesting international development and non profit organizations- you may want to set up meetings with them on Wednesday afternoon.

This year’s meeting will be held July 29-31st in Seattle Washington, USA. The REI (an outdoor clothing co-op) flagship store has a beautiful meeting space on their top floor we’ll be using: http://www.rei.com/stores/seattle.html. It is a great big open space, with windows, wifi and in a neighborhood full of good food, close to the downtown core.

How can you participate:

• The investment (logistics and registration fee) is USD$100 and it is non-refundable
• All costs related to your stay in Seattle (travel, hotel, meals beyond coffee/snacks at the meeting) must be covered by you

• If you are interested in leading an Open Space session, please let us know here to help us all start thinking about juicy topics - you can also offer a session(s) on the spot in Seattle without prior notice. You can request a wiki account here. WE know some of you need clarity on your ability to "present" for your sponsor/organization. ‘Open Space is about ‘holding the space and kicking off the conversation and gathering notes/ideas’ rather than presenting to a topic’. If you commit to offering an Open Space session, that is our equivalent of a "presentation." However, we remind you that there will be no PowerPoint facilities and the spirit of the gathering is participation vs straight "presentation." All in the spirit of knowledge sharing and learning. So plan accordingly!
• 2013 Poster session: If you are interested in presenting some of your work/research, the workshop includes a poster stream. Posters are invited from everyone who is attending or interested in attending; practitioners and academics alike. Thematically, posters can touch on anything you feel is relevant and related to the overall idea of the workshop. It would be great to see some posters discussing emerging KM tools, M&E approaches of KM, and the mainstreaming of KM in development organisations; but you are by no means restricted to this. The posters will be displayed in the convening space for the time of the workshop and every presenter will have the opportunity to give a 5 minute presentation of their poster. Please send either a first draft of the poster or a 300 word description to p.grunewald@lboro.ac.uk by the 21th June 2013. Feedback will be given in a timely manner and a digital version of the finalised posters is due by the 17th July 2013. Please bring a printout of the poster to display during the workshop. Size of the printout: since there are various paper size systems in use around the globe we are quite flexible regarding the size. To have some uniformity ANSI C or A2 are a good guideline; they are fairly big. If those two standard sizes are not to your convenience aim for something in this area: width ~ 425mm & height ~ 570mm.

Homestay Request

Nancy will do her best to pair out of town folks on limited budgets with her friends for home stay. Right now we have one backyard tent in the wonderfully cool Fremont neighborhood confirmed. ;-) Your host has years of experience in the water sector! Nancy’s house is already booked by some of the planning committee. ;-)

If you get a homestay, you will most likely need to use the city bus system to get to the meeting venue downtown. Make sure you are comfortable with this. We aren’t expecting hosts to be drivers as well!

Airport & Public Transportation Information

You can fly into SEATAC airport (http://www.portseattle.org/Sea-Tac/Pages/default.aspx) and from their easily catch the LINK light rail into town and disembark at Westlake. From there it depends where you are staying. To get to the venue, you can either walk or take a bus (trip planner here: http://tripplanner.kingcounty.gov/) or the South Lake Union Trolley (http://www.seattlestreetcar.org/slu.htm) (it is an uphill 6 block walk....)

Rental Cars

Unless you are staying outside of the downtown area, don’t get a car. You will be happier on foot/public transportation as parking can be expensive downtown. If you want to rent a car, any online travel site can help you access options such as http://travelocity.com

Tourism Options

Seattle and Washington state are beautiful land the end of July/early August is our peak season for sunny, temperate days. Within 60-90 minutes you can be in one of two of our local mountain ranges for camping and hiking (the Cascades to the east and the Olympics across Puget Sound to the west.) You can kayak, stand up paddle board here on our abundant lakes or out in Puget Sound (the water is COLD - be warned!) To the south we have Mount Rainier (dormant volcanic mountain) and south of her, Mt. St. Helens which exploded 30+ years ago and has amazing views and hiking. There are rivers for kayaking and whitewater, though depending on rain and snow levels, they will be a bit tamer this time of year.

The ocean is 90 minutes away with some other fun seaside options up to 3 hours away. You can take ferry rides to communities around Puget Sound - Bainbridge Island is a great 30 minute trip with lovely food at the other side. Drive up and cross over to Whidbey Island and cruise it from North to South and catch a ferry back to “the mainland.” Don’t miss Deception Pass State Park. Or book a B&B or cabin and just relax. DO KNOW this is peak tourism season, so pre book unless you like a risk! If you really want to get away, go to the San Juan Islands!

Portland is a 3 hour drive to the south and Vancouver, BC, 3 hours north (DO pay attention to VISA issues if you are going into Canada and coming back into the US!) Within 3-4 hours are 4 National Parks or Monuments, many National Forests and State Parks. Personally, Nancy LOVES the Olympic Peninsula and can give you tips of where to go.

In Seattle we have art, music, and when you will be here, we’ll be in the midst of our summer festival, Seafair (http://www.seafair.com/). Into rock music? Check out the unique building and contents of the Experience Music Project (which also has a SciFi wing!). The Seattle Art Museum (and its Asian American building, the amazing Olympic outdoor sculpture park) brings you a little culture. Wander up to hipster Capitol Hill neighborhood for music, bars and seeing/be seen. Check out Seattle’s famous Pike Place Market. Or just wander and people watch. If you want to keep working, set up visits at some of the emerging international development organizations in Seattle.
