Role play can be used to start discussions, to re tell stories or to build more understanding on an issue. It can be used with video though to film a performance is complicated and best avoided. However, if the role play is something simple like an interview or a piece to camera, it can be a useful activity for groupwork.
When to use
Role play can be used to develop empathy for your oppressor or for whom you are telling the story. It can also be used to explore how rights are negotiated.
How to use
1. Start with two people negotiating a right 2. Ask another group member to join as another stakeholder who can change the dynamic 3. Repeat as necessary 4. Ask a group member to join as ‘the project’ – do they engage, look the other way, focus on the right things in the situation?
