Head Communication, Documentation and Information Services (CODIS)
The Organization ICARDA is a non-profit international agricultural research center in a worldwide consortium of 15 centers, supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The CGIAR is co-sponsored by the World Bank, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). With a staff of over 400 scientists and support personnel, representing more than 45 nationalities, ICARDA addresses two key areas of agricultural research: germplasm improvement (cereals and legumes) and natural resource management. The Center has a global mandate for barley, lentil and faba bean improvement, and a regional mandate for the improvement of wheat, chickpea and forage and pasture legumes. A major emphasis is placed on the conservation and management of land and water, and improved productivity of small ruminants in integrated farming systems in dry areas. The Center’s research and training programs are implemented in partnership with national programs and, in most cases, with other CGIAR centers as well as advanced research institutes in both developing and industrialized countries.
The Position The position of Head of Communication, Documentation and Information Services (CODIS) is based at ICARDA’s headquarters and main research station located 30 km south of Aleppo in Syria, and reports to the Assistant Director General (External Relations and Communications).
Responsibilities Overall The Head of CODIS manages, guides and supervises the activities of a team of over 20 staff members in diverse areas (writing, editing, design and layout, printing, library and documentation, and information/knowledge management and dissemination) to promote awareness and impact of ICARDA’s work; develops and delivers a communications strategy with recognizable outcomes; develops partnerships, networks and alliances; develops proposals for staff development and operational and capital budgets. Specific Writes/edits the annual report and other flagship publications and public awareness material, both in web and print format, to ensure they are powerful and effective; manages and contributes to ICARDA’s website to ensure it is innovative, up-to-date, engaging and serves as a key tool to meet the information needs of the diverse audiences of the Center (scientists, extension personnel, donors, policy makers, general public); serves as ICARDA’s key representative in promoting and strengthening relations with international media; sets priorities and ensures that deadlines are met; exercises quality control over the products of CODIS and ensures client satisfaction; makes periodic assessments of the impact of CODIS services and products on the Center’s stakeholders; provides support to executive management in areas relevant to CODIS functions.
Requirements Master’s (Ph.D. preferred) degree in agriculture or a related field, or communication, and at least 10 years of experience at a senior level involving managerial responsibilities, preferably in an international environment; experience in developing countries an advantage; excellent command of written and spoken English; ability to work under pressure, and as a team member with colleagues from different nationalities, cultures and backgrounds; excellent time management and interpersonal skills; attention to detail; excellent computer skills; knowledge of Arabic and/or French desirable. Terms of Appointment This is a core position but the initial appointment will be for a probationary period of one year, renewable thereafter on an annual basis. The salary is paid in US dollars. Living in Syria Aleppo is Syria’s second largest city. Syria has many historical and archaeological sites, some a short drive from Aleppo. There are four distinct seasons and the terrain varies from desert to mountains to fertile fruit orchards. Major international airlines fly into and out of Damascus and Aleppo. In addition to the internationally-accredited School, ICARDA runs a Sports and Social Club for the staff.
